It’s Saturday. Sky is blue and clear aside for some thin scattered clouds far in the distance. There is a cool breeze this morning, cool enough that I need my jacket as I sit in the shade on the balcony. When I sit out here I always seem to see at least one cat wandering below. This town has many cats but no stray dogs.
We noticed yesterday afternoon more people in town, not a lot, but more. I am guessing when June begins this place will feel a good bit busier even though high tourist season doesn’t start until July.
The big news of the day is Jim woke with vertigo, much worse than it’s been the past 2 months. He thinks he triggered it by skipping stones on the sea last night. The quick jerking motion of his neck and shoulder were too much even though it didn’t occur to him at the time.
I did some massage and craniosacral on him, then a bit later he did the epley maneuver. This caused him to barf. He had felt mildly nauseous when he woke so he was not surprised. When he did the maneuver back in Seattle with his PT, Suze he did not get sick, but she said it is common. In any case, it is too soon to tell how his head is. We are scheduled to drive 5 hours to Zagreb tomorrow. I hope Jim is well enough to drive safely because I do not feel confident about driving here at all. For one thing I have not driven this car. It’s a manual, which isn’t a problem, but it has some features I’m not used to such as it turns off when you stop at a traffic light. I probably would do fine on the freeway because for much of the drive it’s usually not too busy although people drive very fast. But I’m most worried about getting from here to the freeway and then from the freeway to our place in Zagreb. If he is not worse Jim thinks he can probably drive. We can stay here another night if necessary but there is no guarantee he would be better by Monday.

After a long nap, and a long walk along the sea, first to the south, to a tiny cute village that we did not know existed, then to the north back toward Baška Voda, Jim felt a good bit better. Not great but better. We ate dinner (outside) at a place we’d not eaten before which was very good although we were the only ones there. The waiter, a middle-aged man, was very friendly and seemed to genuinely like serving people as opposed to other waiters who clearly do it simply for the money. Unless the service is horrible we tip well, even to the aloof servers. When we first started traveling here tipping was not expected, but now it is. We even had two servers specifically say the tip was not included. Both times it happened in tourist towns, and never in Serbia.

Sunday morning in Promajna. I’m at the table inside because it’s too windy and cool to sit outside even though skies are clear. The wind moans and intones through openings somewhere in the building. We are the only ones here, by the way, as far as we can tell. There are 12-14 units in this building. Jim is humming, trying to see if it will help his head. He woke feeling worse than last night. If he is going to drive he would like to feel better than he does now. He is ok when he looks straight ahead but gets a bit dizzy when he turns his head either direction. He is trying to decide whether to try the Epley move again and risk making it worse, or to just hope he feels better the longer he is upright and awake.
…
Jim did the epley maneuver again and didn’t get sick this time. It seemed to help a bit, as did eating breakfast and going for one more walk on the path by the sea. Again I kept commenting on the beauty and pausing to take photos of the water, trees, flowers and the big massive mountain. I felt sorry to be leaving this gorgeous place but also eager to get safely to Zagreb. I always wonder if this will be my last time visiting each place we go.
By the time we got home Jim said he felt like he was probably well enough that he could try driving, so we packed up and left at about 11:30 for Zagreb. Thank goodness we arrived safely!
