We had a leisurely day Wednesday. I worked on some writing, did laundry (hung it on the line over the balcony as there is no dryer), and spent way too much time translating info about how to add time to our SIM cards (all info is in Serbian, and the process confusing). In the afternoon we took a leisurely two hour walk from the house up above town, an extremely scenic loop we had done once before. Weather was just right, sights and views beautiful. Saw a view of the Drina far below us, lots of wildflowers, haystacks, lizards, sheep, newly tilled fields, abandoned stone houses and barns, and various working small old farms and some newer homes. When we walk on back roads we often hear Balkan music blaring from someone’s radio and indeed we heard music on this walk as well. Another thing we often see here are family cemeteries in fields or near the road.
On this trip we have noticed that more towns seem to have recycling pick-up in addition to garbage. Outside of towns no such services exist and as I mentioned earlier make-shift dumps litter the countryside. But at least the towns are improving their services, and I think I’ve been seeing less trash in the streams and rivers.
In the evening we walked into town and went to the phone card store having decided that would be much easier than trying to figure it out online and were relieved to have that taken care of. After sorting that out we ate dinner at the place we ate on Monday, then strolled the pedestrian mall, got cash and stopped at a market. I was once again impressed by all the locals strolling about. I am envious of the lack of crime and the easy-going sense of community. On our way back home Jim stopped at the outdoor gym and did pull-ups. We also bought a lavender plant for Milesa from a tiny shop.
